HERE FOR LIV GOLF? HERE’S WHERE TO GO NEXT

Swell Brewery, McLaren Vale

So you’re in Adelaide for LIV Golf, but keen to see more than just the course?

You’re in luck. Just 40 minutes south of the city, McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast is where world-class wine meets the sea. And by coast, we mean 31 kilometres of turquoise water and white sand beaches. Some of the best in South Australia.

But it’s not just about wine and beaches. There’s standout food, breweries and distilleries, character-filled villages and big open landscapes that feel a world away from the city.

Here are our top picks if you’re short on time.

Wineries

With more than 90 cellar doors, you’re spoilt for choice. A must-see is the iconic d’Arenberg Cube, yes the giant Rubik’s Cube, which is well worth a visit. Other well-known names include:

  • Coriole
  • Wirra Wirra
  • Mitolo
  • Mollydooker
  • Maxwell Wines.

If boutique cellar doors are more your style, try Sampson Tall, Shirvington, Berg Herring and Somos Wines. Along Foggo Road, you’ll find six wineries and distilleries clustered close together. This is a great option if you want to taste more without travelling far.

Friday night Golden Times at Down the Rabbit Hole are also a local favourite. You’ve probably seen pictures of the double-decker bus and the soft sunlight glowing across the lawn as the sun sets and the music kicks in.

Breweries and distilleries

If beer or spirits are more your thing, check out Penny Red Beer Co, South Coast Brewing Co, Swell Brewing or Vale Restaurant and Bar The food here is a standout too.

Never Never Distilling Co has firmly put McLaren Vale on the gin map. Expect striking architecture, sweeping views and, of course, exceptional gin. Neat Spirits and McLaren Vale Distillery are also well worth a stop.

Food

Arrive hungry. McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast delivers everything from casual eats to award-winning dining. Think juicy burgers at places like Kickback Brewing, through to refined dining at Maxwell Restaurant, a Gourmet Traveller Restaurant of the Year winner.

With so much coastline, dining with a sea view is easy. Try Mamma Carmela’s, Star of Greece, Pearl or the Silver Sands Beach Club.

Beaches

South Australian summers can be hot, and there’s no better way to cool off than a swim. Aldinga Beach is known for its white sand and calm, clear water. You can even drive onto the beach. For waves, head to Moana Beach.

Forgot your bathers or togs? Maslin Beach is officially an unclad beach. Just be sure to walk past the sign before leaving your clothes behind.

Looking for more?

Hire an e-bike e-bike or e-tuk-tuk and explore the region via trails that connect wineries and townships.

Or slow things down and wander through the coastal villages. Aldinga, Port Noarlunga and Christies Beach each offer a relaxed seaside vibe. McLaren Vale Main Street is well worth a stop, while Willunga blends cafes, galleries and boutique shopping. Visiting on a Saturday? Do not miss the Willunga Farmers Market.

The wrap-up

Come for an afternoon, stay for the day or turn it into a long weekend. However long you have, McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast makes it easy to experience the good life. And chances are, you’ll be back.
