Every Saturday morning, Willunga comes alive with the colour, flavour and community spirit of one of South Australia’s best-loved farmers markets.
Held in the grounds of Willunga High School from 8am to 12 noon, Willunga Farmers Market is a weekly ritual for locals and a must-do for visitors exploring McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast. Arrive hungry, grab a coffee, follow the smell of fresh bread and breakfast cooking, then take your time wandering between seasonal produce, artisan goods and friendly stallholders who know exactly where their food has come from.
This is the kind of market where the person selling the produce is often the person who grew, baked, picked, cured or made it.
Taste the region in one morning
Willunga Farmers Market brings together a changing mix of around 50 to 60 stalls each Saturday, with produce that reflects the seasons and the region’s strong farming and food culture.
You’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat, dairy, eggs, bread, smallgoods, flowers, honey, preserves, wine, cider, coffee, pastries, ready-to-eat meals and plenty of pantry staples to take home. Many stallholders offer organic, chemical-free, biodynamic or regeneratively farmed produce, along with gluten-free, vegetarian and allergy-friendly options.
It’s the perfect place to stock up for a weekend away, pick up supplies for your accommodation pantry, or simply enjoy breakfast in the fresh air before exploring Willunga, McLaren Vale and the coast.
A market with serious food credentials
Willunga Farmers Market is more than a Saturday shopping stop. Established in 2002, it was South Australia’s first farmers market and has played a major role in shaping the food culture of the region.
Its reputation reaches well beyond the local community. In 2019, Willunga Farmers Market was named Australia’s Most Outstanding Farmers Market at the delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards, recognising its authenticity, community focus and connection to local producers.
The market has also attracted national attention, including a visit from celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott during filming for SBS series Ainsley’s Australian Market Menu. Inspired by the produce and people of Willunga, Ainsley created dishes using local ingredients, showing exactly why this market is such a favourite with food lovers.
Shop like a local
For locals, the market is part of the weekly rhythm. For visitors, it’s one of the easiest ways to experience the region like someone who lives here.
Bring a basket, chat to the growers, ask what’s in season and build your own Fleurieu feast from the stalls. You might leave with fresh greens, local eggs, cheese, bread, berries, bacon, olive oil, flowers, pastries or something ready to eat on the spot.
Visiting for the weekend? Pick up ingredients for a relaxed breakfast, a picnic lunch or a simple dinner back at your accommodation. The market is also a favourite with local chefs, who source seasonal ingredients for menus across McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast.
Make a morning of it
Start your Saturday at the market, then spend time exploring Willunga’s historic streets, local shops, cafes and country-town charm. From there, you’re only a short drive from McLaren Vale cellar doors, coastal walks, beaches and scenic drives.
Whether you’re here for the food, the people, the produce or the atmosphere, Willunga Farmers Market is one of the best ways to taste the region in a single morning.
