Overview
Historic jetty pylons, cliffside caves, swimming and one very good restaurant make Port Willunga one of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s most distinctive coastal stops.
Port Willunga is one of the Fleurieu Peninsula's most recognisable coastal spots, around 45 minutes south of Adelaide and just 10 minutes from McLaren Vale. Its ochre cliffs, sheltered beach, old jetty pylons and hand-carved caves give this stretch of coast a character all its own.
The beach is popular for swimming, paddleboarding and long walks, while the remains of the historic jetty have become one of the Fleurieu's most photographed coastal landmarks. Beneath the cliffs, old fishermen's caves add another layer to the landscape and are best explored around low tide.
Just above the beach, Star of Greece has become a destination in its own right, serving local food and wine with views across Gulf St Vincent. The restaurant takes its name from the Star of Greece shipwreck, which sank offshore in 1888 and remains a popular dive site.
With McLaren Vale's cellar doors, restaurants and vineyards only minutes inland, Port Willunga makes it very easy to combine a morning at the beach with a long lunch or afternoon of wine tasting.
