Overview
Varney Wines is set in a lovingly restored, heritage-listed 1870s Limestone Barn.
Located at the Gateway to McLaren Vale with sweeping views over the rolling hills of the Onkaparinga Gorge, Varney Wines is set in a lovingly restored, heritage-listed 1870s Limestone Barn.
Their winemaking approach is traditional yet sensitive.
Winemaker, Alan Varney, is not afraid to step out of the box and go with his intuition, gleaned from years of winemaking experience in Australia and abroad. He utilises whole bunch and/or whole berry addition, extended cold soaks, wild yeast, submerged cap fermentation, foot treading, carbonic maceration, and extended time on skins. As he says "Whatever the fruit calls for really". There is no set fermentation regime in the winery. He only uses old seasoned oak and does not rely on fining or filtration. Ferments are closely monitored and the various tools and tricks of the trade are utilised to guide the fruit through its journey from vineyard to bottle.
Guests can enjoy premium structured wine tastings featuring white and red wines, fortified wines, barrel tasting experiences, casual wines by the glass and delicious snack platters. Take in the unique views only seen at Varney Wines. Outdoor lawn seating available, as well as a fully shaded verandah, and a cosy warm fire during the cold Winter months.
Tasting Room now open Friday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm.
