Overview
Sellicks Beach pairs a wild stretch of Fleurieu coastline with fishing, surf, local wine and easy access to McLaren Vale and the southern Fleurieu.
Sellicks Beach is where the hills finally run out of room. At the southern edge of metropolitan Adelaide, the Mount Lofty Ranges meet the coast in a long sweep of sand backed by steep cliffs, giving this end of the Fleurieu Peninsula a landscape quite different from the beaches further north.
Around 50 minutes' drive south of Adelaide, Sellicks Beach is an easy coastal escape and a natural stopping point on the way deeper into the Fleurieu. Fishing and surfing have long been part of life here, with boat-launching facilities providing access to the coast and winter swells drawing surfers to the area.
The other reason to linger is what sits just back from the water. Berg Herring Wines pours small-batch McLaren Vale wines from a converted 1862 sandstone chapel, with a particular interest in emerging varieties and a lawn looking back towards the hills and coast. Nearby at Sellicks Hill, the historic Victory Hotel has been part of the landscape since 1858, pairing local produce with one of the region's notably extensive wine cellars and broad views across Sellicks Beach and Aldinga Bay.
With Aldinga and the McLaren Vale wine region close by, Sellicks Beach works equally well as the destination or the detour: beach first, cellar door afterwards, or lunch on the hill before continuing south along the Fleurieu.
