A guide to the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Gin Trail

Words by GLAM Adelaide

The McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast region is well known for its wine culture, but recently, the ever-growing selection of distilleries in the area has also become a draw card for visitors and inspired a Gin Trail.

If you are lovers of gin like us, you won’t be disappointed. Here’s a quick guide for keen spirit-lovers to taste their way through one of the most beautiful areas in South Australia. Top Tip, the gin trail is best enjoyed over a couple of days and booking in advance is always best.

Stop One: Settlers Spirits

Settlers Spirits was one of the first distilleries to open their doors in the region, so we think it’s the perfect spot to start your gin adventure. Much-loved in the local spirits scene, Settlers Spirits craft a popular selection of gin, whiskey, liqueur, rum, and vodka. Head to their distillery door for a tasting or book in for their gin masterclass. Create your own personal blend to take home with you. Our top tip – taste the G & Tea Breakfast Gin infused with Earl Grey tea, or the Shiraz Gin, inspired by their wine.

Stop Two: The Salopian Inn

If you’re on the hunt for some amazing food that is seasonal and local  to go with an array of fabulous gins, The Salopian Inn is an absolute must on your gin trail. They stock over 100 gins (mostly Australian and South Australian), including two gins crafted by The Salopian Inn team themselves. The food is adored by locals and visitors alike, so it’s worth stopping by.

Stop Three: Flights Gin Bar at Penny’s Hill

This stop is a stunning hidden gem, located in the historic Thomas Gross Carriage House, close to the vineyards private airstrip and overlooks The Range! The Flights Gin Bar at Penny’s Hill is one of the newer gin experiences in the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast region. Be sure to taste their own signature gin brand, Mad Men and try a cocktail or two – delicious!

Stop Four: Never Never Distilling Co.

If you’ve been on Instagram in the past few months, you would’ve seen images of the Chalk Hill Collective. Comprised of Never Never Distilling Co., Chalk Hill Wines, and Cucina di Strada, this hotspot features incredible views, delicious gin, beautiful wine, and tasty food. Your taste buds will be in heaven. Make sure you allow enough time to indulge in the entire experience.

Stop Five: Two Accents Gin

Located at the beautiful  Fox Creek Wines Cellar Door, Two Accents Gin celebrates McLaren Vale and South Australian botanicals. Enjoy a gin flight and taste batch-distilled gins including a Shiraz Gin, Barrel-Aged Shiraz Gin, and a classic Dry Gin. A great gin and wine duo lives here.

New: Soul Bird Distilling

Keep an eye out for Soul Bird Distilling – a new offering as part of Shifty Lizard Brewing Co in Willunga. They have just launched their first bottled gin. Introducing New World Dry Gin, a take on the classic London Dry.  Expect all of the traditional flavours with the juniper brought forward and a touch of citrus notes for a crisp, fresh finish. Another great addition to the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Coast Gin Trail.
