MasterChef visits McLaren Vale – a feast for the senses

With an abundance of restaurants, cafes and cellar doors comparable to the worlds best wine regions, the McLaren Vale Wine Region continues to impress. From 3D food printing at d’Arenberg Cube as featured on MasterChef, to progressive picnics, it is all waiting to be experienced!

The region’s historic cellar doors, world renowned farmers markets and quintessentially bold McLaren Vale wine varietals are highlights, with the region continuing to develop and broaden its wine and food experiences. Traversing the valleys and coastline, you’ll find a number of hidden boutique wineries with alternate wine varietals, unique tasting and blending experiences, produce driven cafés and more casual food venues offering everything from platters to pizza and picnics.

Nick Stock, renowned wine writer and long-time fan of the region says McLaren Vale has attracted an exciting new collection of wineries, cellar doors, restaurants and cafés. “Families and businesses that have been here for a long time have also cleverly evolved to keep bringing new experiences into the region” says Nick.

One of the most exciting developments is the head-turning ‘cube’ at the historic d’Arenberg winery, as showcased on the 2018 season of MasterChef. The tasting room, function centre, restaurant and contemporary art museum, is state-of-the-art and an example of things to come in the growing region where history sits alongside contemporary ideas.

“Most people thought I was crazy,” says Chester Osborn, owner and winemaker at d’Arenberg. “With over 14 years of planning, the unique structure features 3D printed food and a bar made of 38 televisions which can transform into seating.”

Chester says there’s never been a more exciting time to visit McLaren Vale. “There is nowhere better in the world; the quality of offerings has never been stronger.”

While new experiences are in abundance, there’s many old favourites too. Russell’s Pizza in Willunga, a local favourite for 25 years, draws crowds from all over the country and international visitors as well. Book ahead to secure a spot in the cosy 1800’s cottage every Friday and Saturday night.

Nick Stock lists the Star of Greece and The Salopian Inn as two of his favourite restaurants. A beer and a meal at The Victory Hotel overlooking Sellicks Beach and rolling vineyards is a must-do on every visit. “It’s without a doubt one of the greatest pubs in the country.”

New or old, the secret to the region’s success lies in the local talent, relaxed vibe and quality produce. “That’s the beautiful thing about the McLaren Vale wine region – it’s full of locals working really hard, sharing their passion and knowledge of the region’s wine, food and hospitality. It’s just a great place to visit and enjoy every time,” says Nick.
